A Trump-backed conservative just won Colombia’s presidency by the slimmest of margins — and the left is already crying foul.
Story Snapshot
- Abelardo de la Espriella, nicknamed “El Tigre,” won Colombia’s June 21 presidential runoff with 49.66% of the vote, defeating leftist Ivan Cepeda who received 48.70%.
- President Trump endorsed De la Espriella and publicly called the election important for Colombia’s future and its relationship with the United States.
- De la Espriella ran on a tough-on-crime platform, promising to end talks with rebel groups, build ten mega-prisons, cut taxes, and shrink the government by up to 40%.
- Outgoing leftist President Gustavo Petro immediately alleged voting “irregularities,” though no evidence of fraud has been confirmed.
Colombia Votes for Law, Order, and a Fresh Start
Colombia held its presidential runoff on June 21, 2026, and conservative lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella came out on top. He beat leftist senator Iván Cepeda by less than one percentage point — 49.66% to 48.70%. More than 26 million Colombians cast ballots, and international observers called the process transparent and orderly. The turnout in the first round was the highest in Colombian presidential election history at 57.88%.
De la Espriella is a political outsider and lawyer who built his campaign around one core message: Colombia needs law and order. He promised to stop all government talks with rebel groups and criminal organizations — a sharp break from outgoing President Petro’s approach. He also pledged to build ten mega-prisons to house violent offenders. Voters frustrated with rising crime responded. Reuters reported that his commitment to fight crime was a key reason many Colombians backed him.
Trump Endorsement and a Pro-America Shift
President Trump endorsed De la Espriella during the campaign and framed the election as critical for Colombia’s future ties with the United States. The win fits a bigger pattern across Latin America — five right-wing or conservative candidates have won presidential elections in the region in less than a year. Colombia has traditionally leaned conservative and close to the U.S., and this result looks to restore that alignment after four years of leftist governance under Petro.
De la Espriella also laid out a pro-growth economic agenda. Reuters reported plans to expand the oil and gas industry, reduce taxes, and cut the size of the government by as much as 40%. He would keep Petro’s 23% minimum-wage increase, so the shift is not a total reversal — but the direction is clearly toward free markets and away from the socialist-leaning policies of the Petro years. A fragmented Congress and heavy national debt will make fast action difficult.
The Left Pushes Back — But the Votes Are In
Petro wasted no time raising alarms. He alleged “irregularities” at polling locations, though no solid evidence of fraud has surfaced. The losing candidate, Cepeda, had campaigned on continuing Petro’s constitutional reforms and boosting social spending. His defeat is a real setback for the left’s agenda in Colombia. Roughly 426,000 blank protest ballots were cast, showing that not every voter was sold on either side.

The razor-thin margin means De la Espriella will govern a divided country. His promises to crack down on crime and shrink the state are bold, but turning campaign pledges into results takes time, political capital, and a Congress willing to work with him. What is clear is that Colombian voters — by the narrowest of margins — chose a different path. Whether “El Tigre” can deliver on his promises is the question that will define his presidency.
