(RepublicanJournal.org) – Barton Cowperthwaite, who starred in Netflix’s “Tiny Pretty Things,” just revealed to his fans that he has a form of brain cancer. The 31-year-old actor said he was seeking a second opinion on his treatment options before moving forward, but he planned to go into surgery within the following week.
Cowperthwaite shared the bad news on Instagram that doctors diagnosed him with a glioma, a type of brain tumor, and that he has progressed to at least stage 2 of the disease. Daily Mail describes the mass as roughly the size of a lemon and located in the actor’s right frontal lobe. The Netflix star said surgery is his only option, but doctors are confident they will be able to remove at least most of the tumor. Despite the hard road he has ahead of him, Cowperthwaite assured fans that he’d be back on his feet in no time.
The Mayo Clinic explains that a glioma can grow anywhere glial cells — which act as a protective framework for nerve cells — are present, so tumors can occur in the brain or along the spinal cord. Symptoms can vary depending on the size and location of the mass, but the most common signs of this condition include headaches, nausea and vomiting, confusion, memory loss, personality changes, problems with vision or speech, and seizures. Experts aren’t sure why some people develop gliomas, but advanced age, radiation exposure, and genetic predisposition appear to be major factors.
Cowperthwaite’s first passion is dance, according to Medium, which highlights the actor’s dedication to ever-improving himself both on and off the stage. “Tiny Pretty Things” only ran for a single season despite hitting multiple analytics goals, and not even the actors are sure why Netflix didn’t continue the popular show.
A GoFundMe page for Cowperthwaite’s upcoming surgery states that his diagnosis came on the same day SAG ended its strike. He was preparing to begin rehearsals for an off-broadway play when he got the bad news.
