(RepublicanJournal.org) – A Republican running in an Ohio congressional primary startled supporters by conceding defeat — hours before the polls closed. Derek Myers then had to admit the message had been sent by mistake. Next, he made another embarrassing error. Voters still don’t know how Myers would be as a congressman, but it’s a safe bet that none of them will be hiring him as a proofreader.
On March 19, ten GOP hopefuls ran in the primary for Ohio’s 2nd Congressional District. Derek Myers is a former staffer who was fired by disgraced former congressman George Santos who claims he let him go over wiretapping allegations. Myers claims Santos tried to seduce him, then retaliated when Myers turned him down.
The polls were due to close at 7:30 p.m. local time, so it was a surprise when, around 3 p.m., Myers’s team sent a concession email. The message said “tonight did not go as we hoped,” and promised Myers would back the winner to help get Donald Trump re-elected.
Supporters only had a few minutes to wonder how Myers knew the result of the election while people were still voting when a new email went out. In this one, Myers said the concession message had been sent “in error as we prepare for both possible outcomes.” He then reminded voters the polls were still open.
It might have been better if he’d just left it at that, but he decided to explain why his concession message was already written. Unfortunately, when he told followers why the messages were pre-written, he made another mistake and said his team had wanted to be prepared “on such an impotent[sic] night.” His campaign later clarified that he’d meant “important.”
In the end, Myers could just have let the concession message stand; he came in last of the ten candidates, with just 1.5% of the vote.
