(RepublicanJournal.org) – The campaign for the 2024 Presidential Republican nomination is well underway. What started as a race between 13 candidates has now dwindled down to three. Former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and former UN Ambassador and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley are the last ones standing with just months to go before the nominee is announced. Haley recently diverted from her campaigning to go to her father’s side.
Late Tuesday night, January 16, Haley’s campaign announced that she had traveled to South Carolina from New Hampshire after learning her father had been hospitalized. She returned to the Granite State the following day, where she attended a rally. The campaign updated the public on the status of Haley’s father, Ajit Singh Randhawa, who has cancer, saying he is doing okay.
Haley has a lot of ground to cover if she wants to win the presidential nomination. During the Iowa caucuses, she gained 19.1% of the vote, third to Trump and DeSantis, who had 51% and 21.2%, respectively. Her third-placing showing earned her eight delegates. In order to secure the nomination, she needs a total of 1,215. With Trump earning 20 in Iowa alone, he’s got a hefty lead over his opponents.
There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Haley, lately, too. DeSantis has picked on her for running a “basement campaign” because she “won’t debate and won’t take questions from voters,” according to The New York Times. There have also been rumblings that because her parents weren’t naturalized citizens at the time of her birth, she’s not eligible to run for president, a rumor that has already been debunked as she was born in the country.
The New Hampshire primary is scheduled for Tuesday, January 23, with the results due later that night. There are 22 delegates up for grabs.
