Taylor Swift Faces Criticism Over Vinyl Record Sales Practices

(RepublicanJournal.org) – In 2019, Taylor Swift announced that she would be re-recording her first six albums after losing control of the original masters to her former record label. When she began releasing the new versions in 2021, she took the opportunity to add some extra songs that hadn’t made the original cuts, and her new versions of “Fearless” and “Red” went down well with fans. She continued in August, putting out a new version of “Speak Now.” This time she went further, adding a couple of limited editions as well as the mainstream release.

On October 27, her next re-release, “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” will go on sale, and again she’s also issuing special editions — but this time, her marketing tactics have outraged some fans. There will be a standard edition CD, but for the first 89 hours after the release announcement, four special edition CDs were also available. Then she announced a vinyl release, too; the Crystal Skies Blue edition features a unique photo of Swift, and the disk is stamped from blue vinyl.

This is where fans started to get irritated. Last week Swift announced another vinyl release of “1989,” the Sunrise Boulevard Yellow edition. It features a different photo and is stamped from yellow vinyl, and it was only available to pre-order for 48 hours or while supplies lasted.

Was taking orders for two different versions too shamelessly commercial? Swift obviously didn’t think so. On August 21, she jumped on Instagram to let fans know the Aquamarine Green edition was now on sale — for 48 hours only.

At that point, fans started complaining. One called it “Another shameless cash grab,” while another took to Reddit to say they’re “actually getting annoyed she keeps doing this.” A third said they “cannot deal with the money-grabbing feel.” Of course, nobody’s making fans buy more than one copy of “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” but the fact that between CD and vinyl, eight different editions of it have already been offered, more than two months before it’s even released, does look a little excessive.
