Reporter May Lose White House Press Credentials

( – A reporter who has clashed repeatedly with White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre may soon lose his right to participate in briefings. The threat comes after repeated interruptions during the meetings, but the man in question is crying foul.

Today News Africa correspondent Simon Ateba received an official warning from the White House, which threatened to revoke or suspend the reporter’s hard pass. The letter details numerous instances in which Ateba has interrupted, attempted to talk over, or heckle others in the room. He shared the document on Twitter, adding that The Washington Post had stoked the flames with a “hit piece” he claims was written solely to strip him of his hard pass renewal.

The letter, which lacks any official header or signature, lists numerous examples of Ateba’s outbursts — some of which date back to last year:

  • On May 13, 2022, Ateba interrupted other reporters repeatedly while they were attempting to gain more information on baby formula.
  • On December 8, 2022, he demanded an answer to one of his questions, cutting off others in the process, and then shouted over the press secretary when she attempted to answer him. He continued as the press secretary moved on to another reporter.
  • On March 20, 2023, he started a shouting match in the press room and generated “a hostile work environment for everyone in that room.”
  • On June 26, 2023, despite receiving a notice on May 5 outlining expectations of reporters allowed in the press room and a warning of lost privileges in the face of continued disruptions, Ateba repeatedly interrupted the meeting. He persisted even after the press secretary called on another correspondent.

Fox News Tucker Carlson slammed Jean-Pierre for the way she handled the March 20 event. He invited Ateba, who insists he’s being discriminated against, onto “Tucker Carlson Tonight” to defend the outbursts. The Today News Africa reporter took the opportunity to claim the administration isn’t respecting the First Amendment because its past and current press secretaries have repeatedly ignored him and other lower-list reporters. He told Carlson, “What happened to me today… it’s a total disgrace.”
