(RepublicanJournal.org) – Former White House chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci is one of the most controversial figures of the last few years. From his role at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which helped fund research in Wuhan, to his performance during the pandemic, Fauci has been under a lot of scrutiny. Of course, now he’s retired — officially, anyway — but one Republican senator, Rand Paul, isn’t sure that’s actually true.

Last August, Fauci announced that he planned to resign from the NIH in December. On December 31, he did so, officially ending his tenure as a government scientist and getting ready to “pursue the next chapter” of his career. However, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has his doubts — and he wants to make sure Fauci really has retired. Paul also believes that Fauci was fearing a potential indictment.
Paul wrote to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra, HHS Inspector General Christi A. Grimm and NIH acting director Lawrence A. Tabak to address his concerns. In his letter, the legislator asked for details on Fauci’s current employment status and whether he was still receiving “certain taxpayer-funded benefits.” Paul specifically asked about legal counsel and protective services.
The controversies around Fauci mean he’s in the firing line for a number of potential lawsuits — Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt filed one last October that accused Fauci of colluding with big tech companies to suppress information — and Paul is likely worried that taxpayers might be paying his legal costs even after he’s resigned from government service. On the other hand, he did also ask about Fauci’s current employment status, which suggests he thinks there’s at least some chance the former White House official is still working for the government but trying to keep a low profile. There are several hints that, possibly, there hasn’t been a clean break. For example, Paul should have been notified when Fauci’s security clearance was revoked, as it should have been on retirement.
So far, Paul has heard nothing. The delay could come down to government inefficiency, meaning the message just hadn’t been passed along, or it could be evidence that the Biden administration thinks Fauci still needs access to classified information. Whatever the truth is, the Kentucky senator wants to get at it.
