(RepublicanJournal.org) – A radical congresswoman has launched a furious attack on a Supreme Court justice after last week’s ruling on President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) (D-NY) accused Justice Samuel Alito of “corruption” after he went with the majority opinion and shot down Biden’s planned giveaway.
On June 30, the Supreme Court voted on Biden’s plan to write off billions of dollars in student loans and dump the burden on the taxpayer. In a 6-3 decision, the court’s conservative majority ruled that Congress hadn’t given the president authorization to forgive student debt and struck down the plan. Leftists were outraged, and many are calling for Biden to resurrect plans to pack the court with liberal justices. AOC went further, though, and aimed a personal attack at Justice Alito.
In 2008, Alito went on a fishing trip with Paul Singer, chairman of the conservative think tank the Manhattan Institute. Singer also runs a hedge fund that’s been involved in cases the Supreme Court has heard — but Alito insists he didn’t break any rules in connection with those cases. However, the Manhattan Institute also filed a brief together with the Cato Institute in the debt forgiveness case, which was brought by a coalition of states. Now AOC is claiming Alito is guilty of “corruption” that damages the court’s legitimacy and puts “its rulings up for sale.”
There’s a slight flaw in AOC’s reasoning, however. Yes, Alito voted to block the loan forgiveness program — but so did every other Conservative on the court because wiping out student debt is a deeply unconservative idea that’s almost exclusively only supported by the left.
Should Alito have accepted Singer’s invitation to go fishing? That’s up for debate, but he’s very firm that he didn’t violate the Supreme Court’s ethics rules. Many liberals are now calling for those rules to be updated, which suggests he’s right, but that’s not the point. AOC is claiming Alito was induced to vote against debt forgiveness by an alleged bribe 15 years ago, even though he voted exactly the way his political beliefs suggested he would.
