Millionaire Homeowner Stops Heist With a Gun

(RepublicanJournal.org) – There’s a saying that the only one who can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. When intruders broke into a home in an affluent California neighborhood, one of the owners shot at them. Now, authorities are investigating the case.

The incident took place just before 5 a.m. on April 16 in Newport Beach’s Pelican Heights gated community. Law enforcement received a call from a homeowner who said he shot at intruders, one of whom was injured outside his residence. The Newport Police Department and Fire Department responded, as did the SWAT team.

Authorities canvassed the property and found both suspects. The injured man was found outside with a gun in his possession and taken into custody. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. His condition wasn’t immediately clear, though according to KCAL News, he is expected to live. After a short search, the second suspect was also found on the property, in some bushes, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to a statement by Newport Beach Mayor Will O’Neill on X, formerly Twitter, investigators believe it was a targeted incident, where the intruders and homeowner knew each other.

He also said that anyone who comes to his “City to commit crime” should know residents “will defend” themselves.

Sergeant Steve Oberon spoke in a news conference after the situation was contained, saying “It was a home invasion,” though it wasn’t clear if it was a robbery or if the intruders had other intentions.

All four of the people inside the home were said to be uninjured and were safely evacuated from the premises. Residents who woke up to the sounds of helicopters and the presence of a SWAT team compared it to the scene of an action movie. Authorities made it clear that it was a contained, targeted incident and that there were no present threats to the community.
