McCarthy May Remove Ilhan Omar From House Committees in Act of Revenge

( – With the GOP taking a majority in the House and Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) becoming Speaker after a long messy process, the 118th Congress is gearing up to be much different than previous sessions. Before becoming Speaker, McCarthy pledged to remove a handful of Democrats from their committees in the same way the Left removed Republicans. One of his targets is none other than Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and the Speaker appears set to make good on his promise.

Reason for Revenge

In 2021, Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Paul Gosar (R-AZ) lost their spots on their respective committees. Gosar had posted a video showing violence against President Biden and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on social media. Meanwhile Greene had repeatedly posted conspiracy theories that some people viewed as hateful and racist, even calling for top Democrats, including Omar, to be executed. McCarthy could be gunning to remove Omar in an act of revenge for Democrats removing Gosar and Greene.

Omar believes the GOP is targeting her for the simple fact that she’s a Muslim. In fact, she told HuffPost that’s the only reason she can think of for McCarthy and Republicans wanting to remove her. However, the GOP has repeatedly claimed they have a bone to pick with the congresswoman due to her anti-Semitic comments aimed at the Israeli government.

Removing Omar

McCarthy has pledged to dump Omar and other prominent Democrats like Representatives Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Eric Swalwell (D-CA). Republicans have mentioned removing Schiff over his lying about Trump and pushing the debunked theory of the former president colluding with Russia. Republicans are looking to remove Swalwell for his alleged ties to a Chinese spy who has also made campaign contributions to the California congressman.

Removing Swalwell and Schiff will come easily for McCarthy, who has the unilateral power to make those decisions. But, the story isn’t the same for Representative Omar. In order to boot the Minnesota congresswoman from her position on the Foreign Affairs Committee, McCarthy would have to bring a resolution to the House floor and have the lower chamber of Congress vote on the matter, with a majority required to remove her.

Muslim Advocates senior policy counsel, Sumayyah Waheed, declared to HuffPost that while it may seem indecent and foul, McCarthy targeting Omar because she’s a Muslim is consistently “good politics.” Waheed explained the Speaker would be using a single stone to kill two birds. McCarthy’s removal of Omar, whom Waheed described as a prominent and effective member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, according to the senior policy counsel, would both silence her and gain “cheap political points” by stoking Muslim hate.
