(RepublicanJournal.org) – Former Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) was a controversial figure while in office. He was a Republican hardliner, and his scandals led to his failure in the state GOP primaries in 2022. Since then, he’s held a relatively low profile, but now he’s back in the news in a big way.
Althea Shapiro posted on X, formerly Twitter, that she was driving on a Florida highway on Monday, April 15, when she noticed an aggressive driver behind her. She moved out of the way to let the driver pass her. Five minutes later, she recounts, the highway came “to a complete stop.” She moved over to the shoulder to avoid getting rear-ended and noted that a vehicle in front of her had rear-ended a police car.
The story took a turn she said, when a wheelchair rolled out of the vehicle that allegedly rear-ended the patrol car — the same one that had been aggressively tailgating her. In it was none other than Cawthorn. She posted a video, zooming in on the damage to the vehicles and the man she claims is the former North Carolina representative. She also notes that she spoke to the officer who asked if she was a witness — she wasn’t — and said he was continually grabbing his neck as if it were injured. Shapiro said the scene was “very uncomfortable to witness,” but she was glad both men “were relatively unscathed.”
The Florida Highway Patrol did not disclose whether the driver was indeed Cawthorn, though the description matches. Additionally, Cawthorn’s spokesperson would not confirm or deny that he was in an accident.
Cawthorn was involved in a car accident that left him paralyzed when he was 18 years old. He was not driving at the time, but had been accused in the following years of driving aggressively, sometimes while intoxicated. It’s not clear whether he faces any charges in this accident.
