(RepublicanJournal.org) – A former member of the Trump administration has been murdered in an apparent carjacking. Mike Gill, a financial expert whom Trump appointed to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, was sitting in his parked car in Washington, DC, when he was attacked. The perpetrator went on to assault several more people before being killed by police.
Around 5:45 p.m. on January 29, Gill was sitting in his car at Mount Vernon Square on K Street when 28-year-old Artell Cunningham got into the car and shot him, then fled on foot. Gill was seriously wounded in the attack and was taken to hospital. Cunningham then tried to steal a car on 3rd Street. By 7 p.m. he was approaching people on that street and demanding their car keys.
Next, he shot Alberto Vasquez Jr and stole his car; Vasquez died in hospital that night. Cunningham later ditched that car and stole two more, before heading for the freeway network and shooting at police on two occasions. He finally approached two New Carrollton officers at an intersection, brandishing two handguns, and was fatally shot.
Gill remained in critical condition in hospital until February 3, when he sadly died. He was married and had three children. He had spent his career in public service, including working on DC’s Board of Elections.
Under the Trump administration, he was chief of staff at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which regulates the US derivatives market. After Trump left office, Gill moved to the Housing Policy Council, a trade organization for the mortgage market, where he became senior vice president for capital markets.
Artell Cunningham lived in Suitland, Maryland, and had a criminal record. He was also reported to have suffered from mental health issues, and police think he was having a mental health “crisis” when he went on his lethal rampage.
