(RepublicanJournal.org) – The 2024 election is looking more and more like a repeat of 2020 as former President Donald Trump and current Commander-in-Chief Joe Biden are the presumptive party nominees. Politicians around the country are throwing their weight — and endorsements — behind one of the two main candidates. However, one former lieutenant governor has decided to back the opposite party.
In a recent op-ed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan (R) wrote why he was voting for Biden this year and why other Republicans should as well. He notes that the former president “has disqualified himself through his conduct and his character.” Duncan says he remains a Republican, “but the GOP will never rebuild until we move on from the Trump era.” That, he says, is the reason Conservatives must vote for Biden this year.
Duncan adds more to his reasoning, including Trump’s past performance in office — he specifically points out the “erratic” way he handled the public health crisis — and the “incendiary” public statements the former president makes regularly. The Lt. Governor was among those who certified Biden’s win in the state in 2020, despite repeated cries from Trump that he was the rightful winner. The former president is currently facing charges in Georgia, including violations of the RICO Act.
The former Lt. Governor didn’t stop at denouncing Trump. He also pointed out that prominent Republicans are disappointing in their support of him. He names Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (KY), former Attorney General Bill Barr, and New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, all of whom he says are typical fierce detractors.
While Duncan says he disagrees with Biden on policy, he said he can’t vote for “a criminal defendant without a moral compass.” Others have joined him in saying they will not vote for Trump, including Senators Mitt Romney (R-UT), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY).
