Corpse Found Near Obama’s Mansion in Martha’s Vineyard

( – Police searching for a missing paddleboarder in the exclusive Massachusetts town of Martha’s Vineyard have found a body. The search for the man, who was seen struggling in the water, sparked interest because he disappeared near former president Barack Obama’s estate. It now turns out the missing man was on Obama’s household staff.

Just before 7:45 pm on July 23, a paddleboarder on Edgartown Great Pond — a mile-long saltwater pond separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow strip of sand, which lies about half a mile to the west of Obama’s Turkeyland Cove mansion — realized his companion was in the water and struggling to stay afloat. When he saw him go underwater and not resurface, he called the Martha’s Vineyard Police Department, who quickly launched a search and brought in the state police, Coast Guard and other agencies to help out.

The next morning a Massachusetts Environmental Police boat searching the pond detected a suspected body in eight feet of water and around 100 yards from shore. State Police divers went down to check and recovered the body of the missing man. Later that day, the State Police revealed that the dead man was 43-year-old Tafari Campbell, the Obamas’ personal chef.

The Obamas bought their $11.75 million estate from Boston Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck in 2019. Turkeyland Cove Road winds around a wooded peninsula southwest of Edgartown and is notable for its large estates and luxurious homes. On July 24, local sources said there were rumors the initial 911 call about the missing man came from the Obamas’ home, but they weren’t able to confirm that at the time.
