(RepublicanJournal.org) – Russia’s latest invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022 and has gone on for nearly a year. During this time, nations around the world have provided humanitarian and military aid to the defending nation. Its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has repeatedly insisted that his army needs more firepower to kick the invaders out of their borders, especially from the Crimean peninsula. Now, the White House is ready to provide it.
Biden Admin Announces M1 Abram Tanks Will Head to Ukraine
On Wednesday, January 25, the Biden Administration announced it would send 31 M1 Abram tanks to Ukraine. This decision shows both the current president’s commitment to the nation as well as that of the international community. A White House official also highlighted this decision came after weeks of discussions with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that culminated in the European leader agreeing to send 14 Leopard 2 A6 tanks to Ukraine.
An administration official also said that the Department of Defense is working to ensure Ukraine receives the proper training to operate these tanks as well as fuel and additional equipment. They acknowledged it will take “months as opposed to weeks” to deliver the tanks, but it will happen alongside a delivery of eight M88 Recovery Vehicles, which will support the new Ukrainian tank battalion.
Understanding the M1 Abram Tank
After months of military assistance, another round might not sound too significant. However, the M1 Abram is often referred to as the world’s most capable tank. With a top speed of 42 miles per hour, it can carry a crew of four up to 265 miles. It contains an inter-vehicle information system that allows the various tanks to share information, including the location of enemies, quickly.
Russia Responds, Upset by New Tanks
Reuters reports that the Kremlin condemned the move. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared that any tanks sent to Ukraine from the US would “burn” and called the plan “disastrous.” However, with Russia’s war going nowhere in recent weeks, and the continual decline or morale among troops, those statements could be a bluff.
Russia has threatened to use nuclear weapons if the West continues to aid Ukraine in its fight. This latest announcement could finally show the world that the Russian leader is not actually ready to resort to such an escalation, which could push us to the brink of World War III. As Americans watch this interaction play out, many may start to wonder how involved our nation should stay in this war moving forward.
