(RepublicanJournal.org) – US government officials are often exposed to and trusted with sensitive information. Relaying this information to others, especially foreign governments, could put national security at risk. One former White House employee and ex-CIA analyst was recently indicted on charges of acting as an unregistered foreign agent. She is now facing up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
On Wednesday, July 17, the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced Sue Mi Terry had been indicted on two charges related to sharing information with and working on behalf of South Korea’s government, also known as the Republic of Korea (ROK). She served the US government in several capacities from 2001 to 2011, including working for the CIA, National Security Council, and National Intelligence Council. As such, she was privy to information and maintained strong contacts after she left.
Included with the indictment are pictures of Terry shopping in luxury stores while others foot the bill, allegedly as payment for her providing sensitive information to the ROK. She’s accused of “serv[ing] as a valuable source of information for the ROK National Intelligence Service(NIS)” and in turn, received nearly $40,000 in funding for a public policy program, expensive meals at Michelin-starred restaurants, and luxury handbags totalling more than $6,000.
Some of the information Terry received reportedly came from an off-the-record informant with the US Secretary of State in June 2022 regarding North Korean policy, after which she immediately met with an ROK NIS officer and shared the notes that she had taken. She admitted in a voluntary interview with the FBI in 2023 that she served as a vital source of information for the ROK NIS. She was previously warned by the FBI that the South Korean government may reach out with intentions of influencing her and paying for information.
Terry has been charged with one count of conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and another count of failing to register under FARA.
