Idaho Issues Executive Order to Block Noncitizens From Voting

(RepublicanJournal.org) – Over the past few years, there’s been a lot of controversy around noncitizens and the right to vote. While it’s illegal for them to cast a ballot in a federal election, some locales have passed legislation that allows them to have a voice where they live. Now, one Republican governor taking steps to ensure his state remains free of such laws.

In Idaho, Governor Brad Little (R) announced he signed Executive Order 2024-07 on Tuesday, July 9. The Only Citizens Will Vote Act is meant “to protect election integrity, voter confidence, and the sanctity of voting,” per a statement from his office. He called out Blue states and the Biden Administration for making moves in the direction of allowing noncitizens to vote in elections, despite not being legal. He said his state “already has the most secure elections in the nation,” and this measure is just a means to preserve that.

In the EO, Little directs Secretary of State Phil McGrane and his staff to undertake several efforts, including:

  • Routinely reviewing voter rolls to ensure no noncitizens are present
  • Ensuring there are processes in place that prevent noncitizens from registering to vote and validate voter registrations
  • Reporting on the efforts taken to ensure noncitizens can’t register and that they’re removed from voter rolls in the annual report on voter registration maintenance provided to the governor and state legislature
  • Coordinating with the Department of Homeland Security to verify citizenship of registered voters

The act further forbids state agencies from providing voter registration materials to any noncitizens and to confirm that any federal contracts they enter into do not mandate providing such materials to noncitizens.

McGrane also released a short statement saying that while there are mechanisms in place across the state’s 44 counties to prevent noncitizens from voting, “there is always more we can do.”
